Trekking In Bhutan

1) Manas Nature Trek

This trek offers wild life adventure, trekking through wild areas of dense forest along the Mangdi Chu to Wild Life sanctuary of Manas near  the Indian border. The area of Khen Dzonghka has very little contact with the outer world and the ethnic tribe of Khengpas  lead a life quite different to the other people of Bhutan. This trek is ideal for winter months Nov/Feb. Manas Wildlife National Park, the home of Bengal Tiger, Rhino-ceros, many species of wild animal and birds is considered to be number one for wildlife adventure. A challenging Fishing of Maseer can  also  be enjoyed.

02) CHOMOLHARI TREK
There is very little tourist traffic on the pristine trekking routes in Bhutan. This is primarily a positive off shot of the Bhutanese government’s policy limiting tourists to four thousand a year and one has the pleasant sensation of breaking fresh ground on treks in Bhutan.

This trek follows the crystal clear trout rich upstream trail of Paro Chulalong the verdant rhododendron canopied forests & salubrious green alpine meadows. Chomolhari, being one of the most beautiful peaks in the Eastern Himalayas, stands at a magnificent 7300m with age old frontier forts and sprawling yak pastures in its foreground: a truly rewarding sight for the determined trekker, one will have to journey through several places rich in history in Paro, Thimphu, Punakha valleys.

03) LINGSHI-LAYA TREK
This route also takes one upstream the Paro Chu and passes along the ancient caravan route to Tibet, through the valley of Seo, deep into the shadows of Mt. Chomolhari (7300 mts), Mt. Jitchu Drake (7000m) and over Nele Pass (4250 m.) into Lingshi Valley. The inhabitants of these two valleys are nomads subsisting almost entirely on the produce and products of sheep and yaks. Many lakes in Seo Valley are traveler’s wildest dream come true. Almost every cast brings in a fish which can weight up to 18 pounds. At Lingshi the picturesque remnant of a once mighty border fortress is now the residence of the valley administrator. From this hill it takes a day’s trek to cross over to Tibet.

Heading East over the 3 high passes of Gobula (4350 m), Jarila (4600 m), & Shinjela (4900 m) lies the valley of Laya. Herds of the rare Tarking can be seen enroute to Tsai Jathang valley. Laya lies in the Masakhang mountain region which is the source of the Mo Chu flowing through Punakha. The inhabitants of Laya as an ethnic group are quite different from the rest of the Bhutanese people. Like people of Seo/ Lingshi they are nomads too. Along the way down to Punakha (the old capital of Bhutan), lies the historic Gasa fort and the famous, popular hot spring of Gasa that are worth a visit.

04) LINGSHI-LAYA-LUNANA TREK: (Snowman)
This is the longest and most challenging alpine trek in Bhutan which takes approx. 18 days of vigorous walking (average of 20 kms/ day) 365km of mule track including 11 passes, of which 3 are 5000m+. If desired arrangements for climbing 2 peaks can be made.  The trek route  offers a lot for everyone: tough walks, a dazzling range of alpine  flowers and vegetation, herds of rare species of animals, awe inspiring sights of  snow capped mountains, communities of unique mountain people, dreamlike  blue lakes wedge a between cliffs etc. It has something for every one.

The route passes through the tiny villages of the different mountain tribesmen of Lingshi,  Laya and Lunana. Though fixed in their ways of life and impervious to modernization,  they are not averse to welcoming visitors. Along the route one is likely to see plenty of wildlife. The best treat in this context is to see the blue sheep or the Tarkin. One  should be satisfied with pugmarks of snow leopards on the snow. Flowers ranging  from several varieties of rhododendrons (National flower of Bhutan) to blue  poppies bloom in abundance on this route. There is nothing like this trek to see and appreciate the bounty of nature and understand our place in it.
