The
opening of the Mustang area to trekkers had long been awaited. Nevertheless,
to preserve the virgin region, only a limited number of permits are issued
each year. This fascinating trail, still used as a trading route by the
Tibetans, is a continuation of the Kali GANDAKI trek that forms a passage
from the southern to the northern Himalayas. Dry and desert-like, as well
as windy in the mornings, Mustang slowly burns up one's energy, not due
to the high altitude crossings but as a result of the rough terrain encountered
all the way.
THE WHOLE TRIP CAN BE COMPLETED IN 10 DAYS STARTING FROM KAGBENI AND ENDING AT JOMSOM AIRPORT. However there are quite a number of options of doing Annapurna Base camp trek or Pokhara Jomsom trek prior or after going to Mustang. So the duration depends on how you wish to reach Kagbeni and how you wish to leave from Jomsom. (By air or on foot)
Trekking in Mustang is totally different than trekking in any other region in Nepal and many travelers are taken by surprised that such a place also exists in Nepal.
Mustang is restricted area and the trip can only be undertaken under the management of Trekking or travel company. A liaison officer is required for whole trip and permit is issued for minimum of 10 days. Al the food supplies are carried either from Kathmandu or from Pokhara even though there are quite a number of lodges now in the region. While booking the trip please let us know if you wish to stay in lodge or in camp as there is the possibility of staying in lodges.
