ITINERARY AND
PROGRAM
Day 01: Kathmandu-Kodari-Nyalam
Early morning drive of 5 hours to Kodari with the breakfast stop at
Dhulikhel. Complete the immigration formalities and drive to Zhangmo and
to 2 hours to Nyalam, Overnight at Guest house in Nyalam.
Day 02: Nyalam to
Paiku Tso
Breakfast at guest house and drive 4-5 hours to Paiku Tso. The road climbs
to the 5120 Tong La pass and drops down before climbing again to Lablung
La pass at 5124m. After the pass the road turns to west from he Friendship
highway (from here we leave the main route of Kathmandu and Lhasa). After
some of the hills we enter a vast plain. From here Sishapnagma is seen at
the South. Reach Paiku Tso lake for overnight at camp.
Day 03: Paiku Tso
(Acclimatization)
Full day is spent in and around Paiku Tso for acclimatization.
Day 04: Paiku Tso to Saga
The road form Paiku Tso to Saga is very bad and continues in plain but
provides the spectacular views of the Himalayas. The route follows a
narrow gorge before climbing to pass and dropping steeply down to a ferry
crossing of Yarlung Tsangpo River (Which is opened only after 0900m) Saga
is few kms. away from the ferry crossing. (7 hours)
Day 05: Saga to
Zongba and Parayang
This is a long drive of 10 hours. The road is
the continuation of the previous until we reach Zongba which is 145 kms
from Saga and takes 4 hours of drive. There is a check point 14 kms from
Zongba. parayang is another 110 kms from Zongba & 4 hours of drive
hours. It is squalid place. Road between Zongba and Parayang is
particularly prone to sand being swept down from the sand dunes on either
side of the road. Due to the road conditions there are possibilities of
getting stuck and you may have to push the vehicle to get over it.
Day 06: Parayang to
Lake Manasarovar
A long drive of 9 hours and 260 kms. There are three river crossings
between Parayang and Lake Manasarovar. The first is 20kms from Parayang
followed by another in 2 hours. Another crossing before the Mayumla Pass
(an icy pass at high altitude). We will have to pass at least 2-3 check
points including one army post.
Day 07: Manasarovar to
Darchen
Drive of 60 kms that takes almost three hours. There are notning
interesting to see between the drive. Darchen is the base of the Mt.
Kailash for PARIKRIMA or circuit. Drachen is a little village with nothing
special to do around. Though this is an important place for Kailash
circuit and some interesting day hikes start and end here. We can drive
further 8 kms from Darchen for Kailash circuit.
Day 08-09-10(Kailash
circuit trekking and back to Manasarovar)
We spend three full day for Kailash Circuit trek. The circuit is wide and
the trail is a little difficult. The trail climbs in and out of small
gullies. Along the trial one can get the clear view of Gurla Mandhata and
Mt Kailash from Barkha Plain in the first day of the trekking. On the
first day we cross La Chu at 4750 m we stay over nigh at Damding Donkhang
at an altitude of 4890 m. View of the western face of Mt. Kailash is
excellent from here.
In the second day of the
trek we cross La Chu and the north face of Mt Kailash is excellent from
the Bridge over the La Chu. After crossing La Chu the trail makes a
serious climb. It meets the trail from the east bank and climbs more
gently to a meadow full of PHIYA at about 5210 m. Camping at this place
will make easier to cross Dolma La next day.
In the third day we climb
past piles of prayer flags at Shiva Lake 5330m. The trail continues to
climb past thousands of small rocks to Dolma La at 5630 m. Dolma La is the
highest pass and the most difficult pass we cross in our trip which makes
the day the most difficult one in the entire trek. At Dolma La it is
tradition to leave something and take something (In sanskrit Dolma is
known as goddess Tara). After crossing the pass the trail is rocky at
first and begins a series of switchbacks as it passes the Lake Gauri Kunda
at 5450 m and here after the walk is uninteresting and descents toward the
valley. After long and tired walking day we stay overnight at Zutul Puk
Gompa. The gompa is known as the gompa of miracle cave.
The Third day is a bit
easier than the previous one. After breakfast at Zutul Puk gompa we start
our journey back to Darchen by crossing the bridge over the Zhong Chu and
descending toward the plain. As you pass the mani walls at 4610 m Rakash
Tall is seen at a distance. From Zutula Puk Gompa it takes around 4-5
hours to reach Darchen. We stay overnight at Lake Manasarovar .
Day 11: Rest day in Lake
Manasarovar
Day 12: Drive back to Parayang, o/n camp
Day 13-14-15: Drive back to Kathmandu spending nights at Saga and Nyalam.
